Volkmann wins via unanimous decision

Jacob Volkmann can rest a bit easier now. Yesterday, the three-time NCAA All-American wrestler had plenty to worry about -- a past-due mortgage, a growing family, a struggling chiropractic practice, and the threat his MMA (mixed martial arts) career was in serious jeopardy. It appears the last concern is no longer an issue. Volkmann scored a unanimous decision over Paul Kelly of Liverpool as a preliminary event at UFC on Versus 2 at the San Diego Sports Arena in California Sunday. According to MMAJunkie.com, it was Volkmann's ground game developed as a University of Minnesota wrestler that "proved the deciding factor against Kelly, who couldn't overcome his opponent's smothering top game. And even when he tried to escape, Kelly either gave up dominant positions or was forced off to fend off a variety of submission attempts." All three judges scored the fight 30-27 for Volkmann. For the the former Golden Gopher grappler, beating Kelly was pretty much do-or-die, at least for his career in the Ultimate Fighting Championships. Before entering UFC competition, Volkmann had a 9-0 record in MMA. However, he lost his first two UFC bouts but managed to earn a split decision in his last UFC outing in March. The 29-year-old chiropractor/fighter is now 11-2 overall in MMA competition, and 2-2 in UFC. Perhaps just as important, Volkmann earned $20,000 for the victory. Long before marriage, mortgages and MMA, Jacob Volkmann was a three-time NCAA Division I All-American (2001, 2003-2004) at Minnesota.
