John Howard’s fast rise in the UFC hit a speed bump last night. The Dorchester native was defeated by Jake Ellenberger at “UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko” in San Diego. Howard (14-5) struggled to mount an attack against Ellenberger (23-5), who gained control with a series of elbows midway through the second round. The elbows inflicted serious damage around Howard’s left eye, which swelled significantly. The fight was stopped by the ringside doctor 2:21 into the third round when the swelling continued to expand and Howard’s vision was clearly obstructed. Howard had won seven straight fights, including his first four in the UFC.
