The UFC has a choke hold on the world of mixed martial arts.

If a serious fighter wants to hit the big time in MMA, wants to battle the best in the world, wants the highest pay and the most recognition, the UFC is the only place to be.

And while UFC president Dana White has, say, 90 percent of the best fighters in the world under contract, there is still a pretty impressive list of mixed martial artists who are not fighting in the octagon.

Here are the top five fighters I would want to see sign on UFC’s dotted line.

1. Gegard Mousasi: Nicknamed “The Dreamcatcher,” Mousasi hasn’t lost a match since 2006 and has an overall mark of 28-2-1. I fully expect him to one day be the UFC’s light heavyweight champion, which is saying a lot considering the weight class includes current champion Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans.

2. Eddie Alvarez: Champions gym owner Rich de los Reyes recently worked with Alvarez for a Bellator Fighting promo video, and had nothing but great things to say about the 155-pound champion. Alvarez earned his reputation as one of the world’s best during his stint in Japan.

He’s back in the States now, and if he repeats as the Bellator champion this year, a UFC cotract could be in his future.

3. Dan Henderson: Hondo’s knockout of cocky Brit Michael Bisbing at UFC 100 ranks as one of my favorite of all-time. But Henderson’s follow-up shot after Bisbing was knocked out, and his comments after the fight, cost him a new UFC contract.

He’s now with Strikeforce, but the competition is prett slim in his weight class after Jake Shields. Henderson needs to be back in the UFC and challenging Anderson Silva for the middleweight title a second time.

4. Nick Diaz: Love or hate him (I like the guy), Diaz has been on a serious roll of late and has earned the right to fight any one 170-pounder in the world, including Georges St. Pierre. Diaz is the current Strikeforce champ, but, like Henderson at 185, there’s not much there for him.

5. Fedor Emelianenko: Fedor is my sentimental favorite. He’s the last of the old school fighters who still has an aura of invincibility about him.

He’s going to lose some day, but my hope is that he signs a UFC contract soon and runs through the heavyweight division.

The odds of that happening are not great. But I’m not ready to give up on Fedor just yet.
